Project Outreach is a local, homegrown organization. In 2009 I had just finished reading a book called Between Sundays by Karen Kingsbury. The main character is a young woman who spent her free time volunteering at an after school program for foster children. The book inspired me to want to give back and bless others in our own community. I began to try and find places that were in need of a volunteer but had trouble finding a place. I decided that there was a need for a group to organize volunteers for local events. I gathered my family in my living room and asked if they would be interested in joining me in this venture. They were all on board and excited.
We initially began to get volunteers together to help out with charity events in the community such as American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, local homeless shelters, etc. After we started to grow in momentum we created a Facebook page and my mother, Julie Thomas, became our official director. Through this page we were able to start helping families and individuals that were going through a crisis. We have helped cancer patients, widows, fire victims, etc. We help clean their house, take them to doctor apt’s, bring them dinner, get them furniture and clothing. Whenever we would post a need we would see people jump in to help.
Once we became an official 501 3C we were able to begin hosting our own event based on the needs we would see in the community. We host an annual Christmas Outreach supplying almost 1000 toys to underprivileged children. Project Platoon is an amazing project where we ship supplies, food and books to soldiers overseas. Immokalee Serve day is where we feed the homeless, clean and organize the Friendship home and reach out to families and children in the community. Our annual Back to School Bash where we supply 400-800 backpacks with school supplies to underprivileged children.
We have been incredibly blessed to meet and help amazing people that are going through some tough times. It is beautiful to see that as soon as they are back on their feet they are the first to give back! We have so many amazing volunteers and members who can’t wait for the next outreach.
Our ultimate vision is to build a Center that will have Affordable Housing for service people (nurses, teachers, EMT’s, police officers, veterans, etc.), a community center, an education building, a clinic, a church, and a veteran’s place. We are praying for this to happen and believing that God will work out all the details.
Thank you for everything you do to help make Project Outreach successful!!
